Our Story

The Four Rivers Genealogical Society was founded in 1986 by a group of Franklin County residents who had a shared interest in genealogy. The Society is dedicated to promoting genealogical research, assisting members and others in researching and documenting their family histories. It is also responsible for maintaining and enhancing the Ralph Gregory Library which is housed in the Washington Historical Society Museum. It derives its name from the four rivers located in the area: the Bourbeuse, Gasconade, Meramec and Missouri.

In 1986 several meetings were held to determine if there was enough interested parties to form a genealogical society. The founding members were Ruth Frick (President), Fern Shockley (Vice President), Renee Nouss (Secretary), Joan Wessel (Treasurer). Our foundation started with less than $500.00 to get us started. Our first meetings were held in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We later teamed up with the Washington Historical Society after realizing we complimented each other in our endeavors. Our relationship continues with them to this day.

In our 35+ years serving the four rivers area, we have expanded in membership, expertise, and research material to the point of being known, not only locally but all throughout our region.
